this is the real deal. Add it to your stack of DL's. "pig ankle strut" is played by some oldtime fiddlers and string bands...known as "Pig Ankle Rag".

Brilliant beyond-hip cats

Just amazing. Imagine being in a Memphis club in 1929 with these three brilliant beyond-hip cats swinging away! I've been listening to (and playing a liitle) blues for 40 years, and it doesn't get any better than this. In case you were wondering how Gus Cannon played jug and banjo at the same time: He wore the jug in a holder around his neck, like a harmonica holder, just a teeny bit heavier and bulkier. A historical note: On the Grateful Dead's first LP in 1967 were two Gus Cannon tunes, New New Minglewood Blues and Viola Lee. There is no doubt they were chosen by Pigpen.
