This is brilliant

revraikes

Guy breaths new life into the oft pedantic Americana genre with multicultural elements and masterful instrumentation, not to mention biting commentary. Get "Mamma's Favorite" (the live version if you can find it elsewhere - mindblowing).

Good catch

wadestreet

I was drawn to this artist when I heard the first track and found it both clever and poignant. Though it has taken some time for a couple of the other tracks from this album to grow on me, they ultimately did and I can say that there are many aspects of Forsyth's talents that are offered up in this collection. Don't listen to the last track too many times, however,as it will get stuck in your head and lose some of its delightful freshness.

GREAT ALBUM

OldFolkster

Forsyth is marketed in the Blues category, but to me, his work is far too versatile to be labeled in just one category. His songs share far more commonalities with John Hiatt or Todd Snider (and occasionally, an infinitely more accessible version of Tom Waits) than the typical blues release. The album opener, Long Long Time starts out as a catchy, wistful walk down memory lane before turning into a scathing indictment of our modern culture. This sets the tone for the rest of the album. Forsyth is an incredible lyricist with a sense of social conscience balanced with a sense of humor. I can't recommend this album enough.

Excellent Bluesy/Rock Singer & Slide Guitarist

ResoNut

Guy is a Great Solo Artist and member of the Asylum Street Spankers too. Excellent Bluesy/Rock Singer, Slide Guitarist, Harp (harmonica) Player and Songwriter. A couple tunes have almost a poppy feel to them, but dont worry there's lots of variety here. Long Long Time (one of the poppy ones) has Great Spoken Poignent Lyrics, Mamma's Favorite has a Tom Waits-ish feel, Great Acoustic Resonator Slide Guitar on Heart Shaped hole. The Last tune is a KILLER Country Swing/Jazz/Scat Thang. I can Only Say- DOWNLOAD THIS DISC!!! (listen to the samples, then Go For It) Get Guys' Needlegun, Can You Live Without and Steak elsewhere (until they post them here)!!!

They Say All Music Guide

At first, erstwhile blues-rocker Guy Forsyth’s first solo album in half a decade sounds much closer to Beck than the Fabulous Thunderbirds: opening track “Long Long Time” sets an addictive chorus against an ongoing spoken word rant about the degradations of America’s consumer culture, and covers the whole thing with fuzz guitars, distorted vocals, and unexpected touches like producer Mark Addison’s bouzouki and harmonium. The rest of the album isn’t quite so shocking a departure from Forsyth’s earlier, more traditional blues-rock material, but it still expands upon that sound to include different sounds and textures. Combine the varied and engaging arrangements with Forsyth’s strongest collection of songs yet and Love Songs: For and Against is clearly his finest solo work. Highlights: “Brand New Day” includes faux tropical elements while managing to avoid sounding like Jimmy Buffett, while “Rise Up” adds a subtle hip-hop beat to an otherwise straightforward urban blues narrative, and the sardonic blues lullaby “Take Advantage” sets some well-aimed political commentary to a piano-based tune strongly reminiscent of Sail Away-era Randy Newman. – Stewart Mason
