Cowboy country
Hang Jones represents the musical output of one Stephen Grillos who has produced a record that blends bluegrass, roots and alt-country to create a pretty distinctive sound. Telling the story of an outlaw in 1887, its all very Black Horse Western, but this music captures not only the grittiness of the West, but hints at its musical traditions too. Its essentially singer-songwriter fare, but the "concept" album approach as well as some excellent fiddle work and female vocal harmonies provide a welcome depth. This is a love-story Outlaw style. Check out "Mexico Line", "Caroline" and "Comin' Round". Really approachable stuff for anyone who is tempted by bluegrass or roots country music and is intimidated by the banjo.
