Wide-open spaces, troubled minds, whiskey and change
2012 | Label: Partisan Records / The Orchard

Fresh from touring on 2009′s coming-down-off-a-relationship record, The Mountain, Heartless Bastards frontlady Erika Wennerstrom took some time off, road tripping all over the country to spend time with friends and family and music that wasn’t her own. As it turns out, that idyllic late-2010 trip gave Wennerstrom a chance to reassess what was going on around her. It’s no wonder, then, that her band, now a quartet after the addition of Matt Nathan on guitar, sounds positively rejuvenated on Arrow, and is making the best music of its nearly 10-year existence.

Unsurprisingly, there’s talk of wide-open spaces, troubled minds, whiskey and change all over this record. But for as cohesive a collection as it is lyrically, the band switches up musical styles repeatedly. There’s an incendiary T. Rex homage (“Got to Have Rock and Roll”), a few frantic guitarvaganzas (“Simple Feeling”), some irresistible front porch Americana (“Skin and Bone”) and bar-band beer-chuggers (“Late in the Night”). When Wennerstrom finally croons, “I’m on my way home” on rewarding slow-burner, “Marathon,” there’s no question that she’s earned the break.

You NEED to Discover this Great Band & Album!

BigAudioHead72

On a whim and wish to see some live music in the City, my wife and I saw them at the Bowery a couple of years ago and they just blew us away - great swagger and sway; great rock 'n roll! The were playing mostly songs from The Mountain and I would HIGHLY recommend getting that album - it has been on constant rotation since then. Erika's voice & songs are just so darn soulful and honest . So, we saw them in Charleston in late May this year, were they played mostly from the new album Arrow - wow! It is a VERY STRONG follow-up and it's winning us over big time. "You gotta have rock 'n roll" - indeed! I wish this band all of the success that they deserve!

You "Got to have Rock n' Roll"

This collection kicks it up a notch from The Mountain. Erika is a fresh sound and a rocking presence. I am anxiously awaiting their performance in Tucson the end of this month. This has been in my truck's CD player since downloading, it makes great driving time music.

Arrow/Heratless Bastards

Erika Wennerstrom on vocals and the current line-up are Bar Band Great, they are on tour and they make me wish I could catch up with them at there current local, Charlottesville, VA. A great venue for them as this is a College town that Rocks they have more music out there -Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits worth the listen. Blues Rock music at it's rising, catch them if you can. The line-up now is Erika Wennerstorm Vocals, Jessi Ebaugh on Bass, Dave Colvin Drums and Mark Nathan on Guitar

Just so beautiful. Track 6 Skin and Bone has a melody that I could hum for a year.

Love the feel of this album. The first cut is mellow and the imagery is fantastic. Don't be fooled, the rest of the album rocks. I'm always surprised that eMusic never recommends The Black Keys or The Shins with the Bastards. The heavy jamming sounds are reminiscent of all that is great about rock and roll. My favorite tracks are "Parted Ways" "Got To Have Rock and Roll" and "Late Into The Night".

A Field Report from the New Country

By Lenny Kaye, eMusic Contributor

Whither country music - or will it wither? Most of the c&w on strut at the recent CMA awards had more to do with 80's power-rock and 00's teen-pop than the morning farm report. In recent years, an alt-country movement in such Willy-billy suburbs as Brooklyn's Williamsburg has waved a country flag, along with a taste for trucker's caps and Pabst Blue Ribbon. This isn't a sudden outcropping on the range; ever since Gram Parsons… more »
