Although his story of a rocking gay/tranny East German emigre with a botched sex-change operation is entirely fictional, John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig & the Angry Inch packs deeper emotional truths than the output of many ostensibly real bands. Mitchell and songwriting partner Stephen Trask bridge Lou Reed, Meat Loaf, the Pixies, Stevie Nicks, ancient Greek philosophy, Mott the Hoople and '70s AM radio pop with seemingly effortless glee, while Bob Mould adds guitar. It all makes more sense in the context of the stage play and even superior film, but this is the rare movie musical soundtrack even a headbanger could love.
