a joy

Haydn is not everyone's cup of tea. But he is infectiously inventive and one of MY personal favorites. He survives just about every interpretation, and in the hands of Herr Fey, he thrives. Vital, affectionate, zestful performances. More please.

Not your grandpa's Haydn. I'm not generally a fan of the early music ensembles, but Fey's performances with the Heidelbergers is fast, colorful, virtuosic -- and will keep you on the edge of your seat. He unleashes the tympani and the horns, producing a visceral raw energy that makes this middle period Haydn blaze through, and exposes Haydn for what he was, the most creative and original composer of the period. After these sets of recordings, it's hard for me to listen to big band buttoned-down late Haydn, which sounds almost too calculating, safe, and homogenized. I intend to get each and every one of the Sinfonker's Haydn recordings as they come out. Man, also try the Haydn Symphony 57 -- the Prestissimo last movement will bring you out of chair -- whoosh! The real deal.
