Henry Cowell, COWELL: Quartet / Violin Suite / Songs / Piano Pieces / Polyphonica / Irish Suite
Label: Naxos

Henry Cowell (1897-1965) can truly be considered one of the godfathers of world music. Throughout his lifetime, Cowell — whose pupils included John Cage and Lou Harrison — combined thrilling modernism with a deep affection for music from cultures ranging from Ireland to Bali. New York's very fine Continuum ensemble, led by Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, brings Cowell's achievements to the fore in an extraordinary collection that courses through some of Cowell's chamber, vocal and piano music.

Irish Suite for String Piano and Small Orchestra

Jebman93

Henry Cowell really shows his artistic talent as he truly captures the mood of his titles in the "Irish Suite for String Piano and Small Orchestra". His studies with Arnold Schoenberg aren't well conveyed through this piece, but he definitely conveys the meaning of tone poem.
