Hill's Second Best Vocal Album (Ms. Stern Wins)
A superior album to Hella's similar foray into vocals , "There's no 666 in Outer Space," Zach Hill's expansive noisescapes are here freed from Spencer Seim's frenetic but tuneful riffage. The thundering crash of "The Big Picture"'s hypocrite call-outs leads straight into a clusterfuck of unexpectedly tuneful and melodic vocals throughout. "Quantum Leaper of Los Angeles County" gallops along the freeway strip. Stripping "Universe's N.A.R.C" of its barking brief intro, shifting the piano up an octave, and feeding Hill valium would equal a sock-hop worthy slow dance. Events peter down with a dismantled interpretation of Mose Allison's "Young Man's Blues," and a false CD skip glitch remix; an astonishing and overlooked sophomore effort.
