Horace and Beedle team up to charming and infectious results

Fans of trip-hop luminaries Massive Attack will know Jamaican legend Horace Andy from his hugely successful collaborations with them since the early '90s, but the career of this widely-imitated singer with the wobbly-but-golden voice goes back to the dawn of the reggae era.

This collaboration with British producer/remixer Ashley Beedle is part of Strut's Inspiration Information series, which pairs up artists from widely varying backgrounds to see what emerges from a few days in the studio together. The result is a charming set of largely original material with more than a little humor and a wide range of settings.

Andy has always been one of the more "conscious" reggae stylists. That's most apparent on "Seek It," which rails against violence among the youth and the inadequate responses of politicians ("They only talk when Caucasians die"). The remedy he proffers is Rastafarianism, on the likes of "Watch We" and "Babylon You Lose." What rastas have to lose from their diets in order to keep the faith is listed in droll fashion on the dancehall strut of "Rasta Don't," which is dedicated to "all the vegetarians."
