Solid but tensions not ideally held
Eschenbach uses the original version and, with relatively slow speeds, clocks in at over 71 minutes in this live performance from Houston. In all honestly, I do not feel that the tensions in this work are ideally held together and that the music sags in places (I felt the same about the highly regarded Chailly version, also using this text), although the playing itself is remarkably good and confirms the versatility of the Houston orchestra on this evidence. Overall, I find this lacks enough inspiration to overcome the weaknesses, although it is satisfactory enough. So is the sound, notwithstanding some minor audience noise and a slight woodenness here and there.
