It is the Wolf but....

BigD-Bluez

Obviously these are not the original Chess tracks from the Wolf. That being said it still is the Wolf, which is not a bad thing, so maybe at this price point you might be interested, but listen up and decide with ears open. Just would be nice to know the who and where.

New This Week: Lana Del Rey, Leonard Cohen & More

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

Hey, have you guys heard anything about this Lana Del Rey person? I feel like no one's talking about her. What I wouldn't give to find out any information on her. Seems real mysterious. Well, whoever she is, we have her record and a whole lot of others today. Let's go! Leonard Cohen, Old Ideas: Seriously, I think we all just need to take a pause and revel in the fact that there is a new… more »

Revering Revenant Records

By John Morthland, Contributor

You can't say Revenant Records doesn't do right by its artists. Consider Exhibit A, the label's spectacular Grammy-winning box set, Screamin 'and Hollerin 'the Blues - The Worlds Of Charley Patton. The box's binder, the kind that used to hold the 78 rpm records that made up an "album,"… more »

Where Did the Blues Begin?

By John Morthland, Contributor

The biggest debate in blues circles these days is, "where did the blues begin?" Ever since the blues revival of the 50s and 60s, the answer has been "the Mississippi Delta." But in recent years, more than a few blues buffs have argued, that while the Delta is where the harshest form of blues indeed gelled, there is very little evidence to suggest that blues started there. Further, Delta blues in its heyday was almost… more »

Blueslore #02: The Natchez Fire

By John Morthland, Contributor

The Moneywasters Social Club had sold 557 tickets (50 cents in advance, 65 at the door) to its dance at the Rhythm Club in Natchez, Mississippi, on April 23, 1940. Tiny Bradshaw's orchestra, originally scheduled to play, had cancelled when a booking came through at the Apollo Theater in Harlem for the same night. The replacement was Walter Barnes 'Sophisticated Swing Orchestra, but nobody in Natchez's black community of about 9600 people was complaining. Clarinetist… more »
