Finnish funk — it’s not expected, but Huba bring out a surprising amount of it in their self-titled debut. A large ensemble out of Helsinki, Huba play with all the variations of funk available — Stevie Wonder-styled introspection in “Man Brings the Bread,” a P-Funk chorus and horn interplay in “Who’s Got the Nerve,” and more. With strong horns courtesy of Janne Huttunen and Erno Tiittanen, and the proper bass courtesy of Mikko Määttä, there’s an unstoppable force in the music. Despite the geographic and cultural border crossings involved, the group makes funk the way funk was meant to be. – Adam Greenberg
