quirky little surprise
At first it's like The Animals meet Jefferson Airplane in a psychedelic soundtrack complete with xylophones and violins. At least that's my cliche description of a band I find rather clever. # 5 Deep Blue Sea is addicting after you forgive the opening riff borrowed from LIttle Wing. Mermen continues the ocean theme with chains rattling or a pirate's chest spilling out coins along with Hammond organ, church bells, and probably Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Tying it all together is the lead singer's catchy voice which is like Robyn Hitchcock smoothed out with a little Davy Jones for adults. Disc 2 grows more intimate, acoustic and even serious in parts. # 1 Blue and Bone China recalls Playa Giron by Silvio Rodriguez, about the Bay of Pigs.On IAK's other albums there are touches of Jim Croce and dreamy SilverSun Pickups. I have to admit I'm having a lot of fun with only B sides and outtakes on this one.
