A Great Band? Yes?
Idaho's a good band. They're never going to have hits, and have garnered surprisingly little acclaim - and maybe that makes them a great band. They aren't pop (but sort of are), they aren't rock (but sort of are), the aren't experimental (but sort of are) - I'd maybe put them in the same category as Yo La Tengo - a potentially great pop-rock band who just doesn't seem to care about pop-rock. They eff-around too much, but they're really good at effing around. There's just not that many band making long, dreamy and consistently good records. It's great work music, great night driving music - but more than that, if you really want to sit with it and dig through lyrics and great guitar lines and drum parts, you can do that too and still be rewarded. The end result is: you get a really good record with a couple strange tracks that serve to provide the space in between beautifully lush, but still open, breathy music.
