Brilliantly Dissonant Songcraft

TheAccuser

Pure Holocaust is undeniably a classic. These riffs are so eerily dissonant and strange yet still musical that one must acknowledge genius in their creation and arrangement into such excellent songs. It almost sounds like it's being played backwards. The overall sound is pitch-black and harsh but still something you can listen to over and over again. Abbath's harsh croaking vocals blend in with the murk better here than on some of the other albums. The drums thankfully have a natural sound instead of the typewriter-clicking triggers that have come to dominate the scene in years since; also the snare-drums often measure out a slower rock-type beat over the blasting of the double bass, and the contrast works very well. And they don't forget about slow evil doom-crawling, either. It's simple: if you like black metal then you must own this.

They Say All Music Guide

While black metal has certainly become clichéd, there are artists out there who manage to salvage the integrity of the genre. Immortal is one of these bands. On Pure Holocaust, dark, technically advanced, powerful, and challenging riffs propel the songs forward through a myriad of blasting drumbeats. Yet surprisingly, the album also conveys a gentler ambience in sections, without the use of a trite “gothic” aesthetic. The ambiguous emotional quality, unique style, and heart-pumping rhythms are all reasons to purchase this. – Marc van der Pol
