Smooth and Funky Jazz

EMUSIC-01CDD4E8

Jan has always been an inspiring guitarist, and this album shows he can still lay down major riffs and solos both over and across the fretboard. The album has me feeling him venturing towards other Jazz Rock and Jazz Fusion guitar greats, but not quite reaching their heights and highlights. Still a fun album to listen to. Blowing being my favorite after two complete passes. And to answer Mr. Jurek's statement; \"It's hard to point out what might have compelled him to make this record..\" Maybe Jan was trying out the first release of Apple's GarageBand in early 2004 and then moved that trial over to his production team. Michel Van Schie provides substantial value to this whole compilation.

They Say All Music Guide

On his first outing since 2000, Amsterdam’s best-known guitarist, Jan Akkerman, issues a smooth electric jazz date full of twists and turns with material that ranges from a slinky funk cover of the Isley Brothers’ “In Between the Sheets” to the full-on house music of “Urbanstring.” It’s an unfocused batch of tunes to be sure, but the thing that holds them together is Akkerman’s trademark spare, single-string style that never gets in the way of the groove. It’s hard to point out what might have compelled him to make this record, but fans will delight in it nonetheless. – Thom Jurek
