My introduction to her

fontmaven

This was one of my favorite albums of 1987, and it's finally here! She layers gorgeous sonics beneath her typically quirky but evocative librettos, weaving narratives that rival her countryman Leonard Cohen's in depth and immediacy. Some of the lines are heartbreakers: "I went to say 'I love you' but instead I said goodbye" ("Goodbye"); some are cryptic but full of imagery, as in the implied violence of "fists and chests" in "The White Tent The Raft"; the resignation of one's independence in exchange for love: Him: "Let me be your cowboy"; Her: "What does this make me? I see—I'll be the Indian" in "Ingrid (and the Footman)". A real masterwork that awakens the mind. I'll be forever grateful to her for this one.

Although Jane Siberry’s big hit singles were a bit too pop-oriented to truly represent her work as a whole, even those who loved her more off-kilter side would have been hard-pressed to have foreseen the direction of The Walking. For most of the tracks, Siberry dispenses with standard pop construction, instead opting more for a sometimes-surreal narrative approach. This can be a bit trying for those who value succinctness; of the eight tracks, only one clocks in at less than six minutes. Musically speaking, however, the playing is still excellent and even some of the epics are pop gems (“Ingrid and the Footman”). It’s her most accomplished work to date, but it’s bound to lose the casual listener quickly. – Sean Carruthers
