I thought this sort of self-conscious artiness was finally over.
The main work - Extended Play - celebrates the lives, rather than the deaths of children. The fascinating story of the work is told here : http://www.audioh.com/projects/extendedplay.html With a short movie about it you can download. You'll have to remove the hyphen from the download link - eMusic no longer supports URLs in reviews.
This release is, all technical and experimental notions aside, extremely beautiful---and I mean that in the sense that traditional classical music is beautiful. It has depth and feeling in a rare way. It is also incredibly *interesting* to listen to as well. Pre-recorded instrumentations are periodically slowed to a halt or sped up, producing this spooky feeling amidst the whole ensemble. In some ways, it reminds me of the excellent string work in There Will Be Blood. It has that kind of eerie quality to it. The last track, odd as it may be in terms of source material, is actually very catchy. But I think track four is my favourite, which ties together the elements explored in isolation in the first three tracks. Well done, Janek!
