astoundingly brilliant album

scrawdbloke

I first heard the track "Good" and it seemed so energetic, driving forward, bleeding into the future so fast it almost felt like it was gonna go off the rails. "However Long" is useful music, the best kind of melody and lyrical pair that feels as healthy and life-affirming as "Dry the Rain" by The Beta Band. The opening track is an incredible force of nature and the album flows between several different stylistic variations. Funk, soul and blues all dabble with the red-dirt origins of the DBT. A proper album that gets better every time you play it and it's also a lot of fun to sing along to. I happened to buy it on two big slabs of gleaming black vinyl, but whatever format, I can't recommend this record highly enough.

I really undervalued Jason Isbell's contribution to Drive-By Truckers, that is until he left DBT. I then realized his DBT songs are some of the best of the bunch. If you like Jason's DBT songs, I think you will like this album. I find myself listening to this one over and over.

First Love Soundtrack

"Don't forget the songs that made you cry/ and the songs that saved your life," Morrissey once famously sang. But what about the songs that broke your heart? Or got you kissed? This Valentine's Day, we asked artists to share the songs that remind them of that Special Someone — or the One Who Got Away. They tell us about junior-high dances, first kisses, and offers rebuffed. Enjoy, and happy Valentine's Day! more »
