Two superstars, one record, limitless ego
2011 | Label: Roc-A-Fella

After the listening session for Watch The Throne, Jay-Z stood up and revealed to the assembled crowd that he and Kanye had recorded, and scrapped, an earlier version of their much-hyped, long-rumored collaborative rap album. “We had made this very big, impressive album, but I’m not sure if it was all that enjoyable,” he said. So they returned to the studio, he continued, to render it more human. As a result of their diligent efforts, Watch the Throne boasts the following down-to-earth touches: a gold-plated album cover designed by French fashion plate Riccardo Tisci; snatches of recorded NASA launch-code transmissions; a sample of Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness,” which probably could have bought a private jet or five; lyrics about physically balancing on stacks of money; and, oh, they kept the folksy title Watch the Throne.

Despite their best efforts, in other words, Watch the Throne remains what it was destined to be from the start: a massive, unapproachably haughty thing, the most ostentatiously over-the-top pop album in a year that included Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. As he did on 2010′s conspicuous-consumption-nightmare masterpiece My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye piles on jaw-dropping, gorgeous sounds… read more »

I'm on the fence here

MzzDia

I am totally on the fence with ths one, I love/hate/dislike,this takes a few plays to get the feel of this cd. Otis, of course is the the best, followed by Liftoff, here is where I am still on the fence with this one. I love Jay-Z,(it's a Bklyn NY thing) Kanye,well.....let me get back to you.Peace!! BTW my son loves, it I bought this for him.-

give it a little time . . .

at first I thought this record was a little boring, like b-sides from kanye's last album (which I loved btw). I was gonna stop listening to it but I just kept forgetting to take it out of my car. Now I'm really into the album. Often, great albums take more than a listen or two to get.

Excellence

lmgilchrest

I waited up for this album to be released and I am so happy I did. Jay-Z and Kanye West are lyrical genius'. This is the best album of the year!!!

Boring

ToddD

Music? no new ground here. Lyrics? Yawn. These guys break the cardinal sin of pop music in that they are boring, boring, boring. You can be great, you can totally suck, but you should never be boring and this record is a snooze. There are 10,000 records coming out this week that are much more worth your time and money than this over-hyped crap.

No Expectations

SavagePopster

I wasn't anticipating this collaboration, consequently my expectations were low. I am pleasantly surprised. I think if you liked Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy for its messiness, as I did, you will appreciate this team effort. It feels a bit like an anthology—a little of this, a little of that. However, the key components are there. Kanye enjoys a good deal of clever word-play. Jay-Z performs with as much force and confidence as any of his latest albums. The subjects are varied—not just braggadocio (I had to use that word). The production is creative and often fresh, with some surprising use of samples. My favorite cuts are the two Frank Ocean collaborations along with "Lift Off" with Beyoncé, and "Ni**as in Paris" which sports some tight rhythm.

Nah son...

BORNZO

Not the album I was led to believe it would be. Q-Tip gave a free concert in Brooklyn in July & Kanye came out at one point. Tip went on to say the album had production from Pete Rock, Premo & Tip. The Pete Rock piece made it...on the deluxe version, but nada from Tip or Premo. This album is no better than anything else out there. I don't care who the artist is, if its hot its hot, if not its not. This techno electro Hip Pop is weak, hollow music. Because its these 2, people are going to proclaim its utter greatness. Sorry, its just not there. This album could've been from almost any other artists out there. They're supposed be the trend setters, not followers. Return to your roots fellas & I'm rite there w/ya, until then...get that weak ish outta here!!!

This Album is a masterpiece, the beats the lyrics are hot. Definitely a breath of fresh air from hip hop finest mcs producers and not just Hip Hop. Quincy Jones, Russell Simmons RZA ect... bringing their talents together for an album that lives up to it's title. Watch The Throne!!

Bass, Beats & Bars

By Nate Patrin, eMusic Contributor

Hip-hop's spectrum is broader than ever, with a scene in every city and a thousand ways to control a mic. Bass, Beats & Bars ties it all together -- the hustler opulence of Rick Ross, the street-level grind of Freddie Gibbs and G-Side, underground scholars like Shabazz Palaces, and iconic veterans from DJ Quik to Pharoahe Monch. more »
