Measured performance of the Marilyn Monroe-adored concerto.
Label: Naxos

First performed in 1901 by the composer — an extraordinary pianist with unusually large hands who married his first cousin the following year — Rachmaninov's masterpiece of Late Romantic eroticism found its most cogent endorsement in The Seven Year Itch, when Marilyn Monroe declared, "Every time I hear it, I go to pieces." Wisely avoiding disintegration and needless overstatement alike, soloist Jeno Jando, conductor Gyorgy Lehel and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra milk the concerto's multiple climaxes with carefully measured strokes on this 1992 recording, perfect for any amorous adventure.

Low volume level

MsMuffin

It's a shame the sound level is so low. We have a Creative Zen plugged into a Boss Companion 3, they both had to be turned up full, and there was still something lacking in the bass and range. The playing is wonderful, what a shame.

Nice Interpretation

matt.kubes

A clear recording that is well balanced and has a warm sound - it deserves a spot in anyone's Rachmaninov collection. Also, in response to the 3-star review...track 2 is not cut-off for me, so it seems that the problem has been fixed or there was an issue with your specific download.

BAD TRACK

Vivaldi55

Track 2 is clipped short by a few seconds. The sound is abruptly cut off. The CD is probably OK, but the rip is bad. I'd give it 5 stars if the rip hadn't been goofed up.

Sweeping and Majestic

I initially downloaded the album for Rachmaninov's notoriously challenging Piano Concerto but have come to enjoy the entire album. I believe Jando has captured the grandiose aspects of Rachmaninov's whale of a concerto.

Quality of recording

AuntieLolo

The quality is fine, at least according to my middle-of-the-road system. Not like some of the other classical recordings that are hissy or have background noise. I'm not a classical expert, but it seems like a nice interpretation.

Booty-Call Classical

By Rod Smith, eMusic Contributor

Nothing potentially says "howzabout it?" quite like classical music. Yet most seduction-oriented classical compilations are either too prim or based on some ridiculous premise that places impossible demands on orgone-stingy composers. (Given current marketing trends, Sixty-nine to Schubert might appear any day now.) Classical boudoir bait's effectiveness hinges not on the gentleness so often embodied by the aforementioned comps, but on rich melodies and lush harmonies — whether played by a solo pianist or a… more »
