Long last

It has taken a long time for this wonderful score to see the light of day in digital format. I still own the original LP--it is one of my very favorite film scores. The theme is gorgeous, as well as the Viennese sequence. Parts of the score, such as the tango and vaudeville numbers, make for an uneven listening experience, but were necessary for the film. Oddly, even though CDs have more capacity than LPs, several items have been cut from the original: some liturgical singing and Wilma Lipp's performance of Mozart's "Alleluia" during the Nazi period sequence. The sound is pretty good for the age with a bit of hiss that might bother some. The LP still sounds better. I was hoping for a better mastering. Maybe the source has degraded.

They Say All Music Guide

Jerome Moross’ music for Otto Preminger’s The Cardinal is represented somewhat unevenly on this very short soundtrack album. The composer is at his best when he is writing the impassioned, deeply lyrical and moving passages depicting the internal life of the movie’s subject, a Catholic clergyman whose career route to the College of Cardinals is traced — he is much less effective writing source and period “effect” music. It’s not a bad soundtrack album as such releases go for this period, but also not special enough as a complete body of work to recommend it to anyone but serious fans of the composer or the subject of the movie. – Bruce Eder
