They Say All Music Guide

Jim Nesbitt’s biggest hit was a political talking blues number, “Looking for More in ’64,” the success of which spawned several years of sequels in the same vein. Nesbitt used the talking blues formula for many of his other songs, but also recorded song parodies, comedy monologues and novelties of all sorts. The Best of Jim Nesbitt contains 20 tracks including all but two of his hits, “Still Alive in ’65″ and “Heck of a Fix in 66.” His sound is stripped down, no-nonsense country with an abundance of strummy acoustic guitars and Luther Perkins-influenced guitar leads; on some songs (particularly “Tiger in My Tank”) the result is not unlike Sun rockabilly. While some of his political and patriotic material is very dated, it is all entertaining or at least interesting. Spanning the years 1961-75, The Best of Jim Nesbitt may not be timeless music, but it is pretty fun even today. – Greg Adams
