After the Ball part 2

evarts27

If you love Bolcom and Morris's Nonesuch album "After the Ball" (which is also available on emusic), then this is a must have. Morris's voice shows a bit more wear, but her enthusiasm and dramatic flair make this album another winner.

Greatest Hits of 1900 (give or take a decade)

Macsperkins

Straightforward renditions, by female singer with piano accompaniment, of popular songs circa roughly 1890 to 1910. (The same duo recorded a similar album titled "After the Ball," which unfortunately doesn't seem to be on emusic.) Morris's voice here has a touch of vibrato without being grand-operatic. My one complaint is that some of these lyrics were clearly meant to be sung by a man, not a woman (e.g., "Hello, Ma Baby"). Warning: This album seeks to be The Real Thing. If you're looking for irony, camp, tongue-in-cheek corn, or calculating, condescending post-modern posturing (cf. John Zorn's "tributes"), look elsewhere.
