They Say All Music Guide

Guitarist/composer Joel Harrison displays a passion for ethnic music and a flair for unorthodox instrumentation on Range of Motion. One wouldn’t expect a jazz record to feature bassoon, oboe, and English horn, for instance. Harrison uses these instruments to create textures that are genuinely striking. The music is meticulously put together, with improvisation occurring in very specific bursts; Harrison himself solos only occasionally (and always with fuzztone). Rather than show off his considerable guitar skills, he concentrates on crafting an ambitious ensemble music that brims with energy and often an aching beauty. Outstanding performances are heard from Paul McCandless and Paul Hanson on woodwinds, Eric Crystal on saxophones, Dred Scott on piano, Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums, and more. Recommended. – David R. Adler
