Solid, straightforward performance with great soun
There is nothing at all to object to in this recording, and it has a lot to recommend it. It's clearly in the top-tier of Brahms recordings, but I don't believe that it is at the best. Alsop provides a fairly straightforward take on the symphony, and those who want a more nuanced interpretation will probably prefer Bruno Walter's recordings on Sony Classical (now here on emusic). The playing is top notch, and the engineering is flawless, providing beautiful sound.
