John Adams, ADAMS: Shaker Loops / Wound Dresser / Short Ride in a Fast Machine
Label: Naxos

This album is an excellent introduction to some of the Pulitzer Prize-winning John Adams 'most influential works. Adams 'music is vibrantly performed by tenor Nathan Gunn (in the elegiac "Wound Dresser"), the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and noted conductor Marin Alsop, a New York City native who has an instinctive grasp of both the exhilarating, juggernaut motion of "Short Ride" and the meditative ecstasy of the four-movement "Shaker Loops," a minimalistic work inspired by the Shaker… read more »

Wound-Dresser Epic Recording

mark428

Up-and-coming American baritone Nathan Gunn is featured on this popular Naxos recording of works of John Adams, in the setting of the Whitman text 'The Wound-Dresser.' The original poem, though somewhat longer, depicts the poet's experiences as a nurse during the Civil War. Adam's functionally atonal (though highly listenable) work speaks volumes to a contemporary audience. Also on this album are a precise performance of 'Shaker Loops' and 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine' and a somewhat blase 'Berceuse elegaique.' Altogether a great recording.

If you like baritones belting out ballades about blood, then you'll want track 2, "The Wound Dresser." If you don't (I don't), here's a suggestion: Remove track 2 from the download and download Barber's cello concerto (http://www.emusic.com/album/10872/10872787.html) and Adams's "China Gates" (Jenny Lin's version http://www.emusic.com/album/10888/10888377.html). When you burn the CD (74 min.), stack the cello concerto on top of the remaining tracks of Adams's "Short Ride" and tack on "China Gates" to the rear. Voila!
