The perfect pair

Schproing

This is one of my favorite jazz albums. John Hicks' is right in the groove, and may actually be channeling Strayhorn. Very expressive album.

Wonderful tribute

rene.leemans

This record is totally simpatico, a truly understanding reading of some classic jazz themes that avoids any temptation to crank up the romanticism. Instead, Hicks emphasizes the structure of each song, articulating 'A flower is a lovesome thing' with admirable simplicity and grace. Just a wonderful tribute.

Exceptional Composer Done Proud

Being a long time lover of Strayhorn/Ellington compositions, their solo and duet piano work, and the Webster/Blanton years, I can only say that this album is as fitting a tribute as one could imagine, true to the sophistication of both artist/composers. Had they lived to hear this sympathetic tribute to their work, both Strayhorn and Ellington would have been proud to have been so well remembered. The renditions are true to way the music was conceived, and played with great empathy.

They Say All Music Guide

John Hicks and Billy Strayhorn prove to be an ideal match on this outstanding High Note release, Something to Live For: A Billy Strayhorn Songbook. For years Hicks has enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest and most versatile pianists in New York. Known mostly as an explosive, adventurous player in the mode of McCoy Tyner (check 1990s Power Trio with Elvin Jones and Cecil McBee), he shows his softer side here, tackling the lush romanticism of Strayhorn’s timeless compositions with an appropriately light touch and sense of nuance. – Joel Roberts
