‘Navigate Home’(2009) remains a sumptuous and layered work which rewards repeated listening with new detail waiting to be uncovered at every turn. However, as ’Dry Run’ proves, there is often an equal amount of beauty to be found in simplicity and this new collection stands tall on its own merits as the purest possible portrayal of this master songwriter’s art. The first thirteen tracks here comprise John’s unadorned piano and vocal demos for ‘Navigate Home’, with the added bonus of two previously unheard songs which didn’t make the cut for reasons which are plainly not related to quality. Both are practically worth the price of entry alone - the jaunty and concise ‘In Your Dreams’ where not a single note is wasted in pursuit of the tale and ‘Genius’, which must surely strike a chord with unknown and unsung singer-songwriters everywhere...even if we won’t all admit it! ‘Navigate Home’ or ‘Dry Run’? Either choice will enchant...but enrich your life and go for broke!
