Give and Take
Trombone, bass and drum trios are a rarity in jazz. We usually find the rhythm section accompanied by a saxophone and sometimes a trumpet and almost always a piano. This recording was recommended to me years ago by a fellow aficionado and from the first listen, I was enamored with the music and the musicians performing. All three of these musicians are leaders in their own right. While some trios tend to focus on the leader, this one focuses on all three, collectively, in duet and singularly . The musicians are always pushing themselves and never seem to be lacking in swing even when the sounds are not what one would consider swinging. Definitely a must listen for anyone interested in jazz music that encompasses composition and improvisation.
