the one that got me hooked

rhmayer

Early Sco classic, after which I bought every Scofield album that came my way. Softly As In A Morning Sunrise is unlike any version you've heard and has one of his best solos. The whole album is great and the samples don't do it justice. Beirach is also in top form. 5 Stars. Tracks 4 and 5 aren't on the album so I can't comment about those, but are apparently from the same Nov. 4, 1977 Munich concert.

not 2007, but great nonetheless

guitarquartet

this is probably from the early '80s and is a great example of Sco from that period with a particularly fine Beirach tune 'Leaving' in there too - enjoy!

They Say All Music Guide

This set features some high-quality post-bop guitar playing by the immediately distinctive John Scofield. The four lengthy selections — three originals and an over 15-minute rendition of “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise” — find Scofield, pianist Richie Beirach, bassist George Mraz and drummer Joe LaBarbera really stretching out. The music holds one’s interest throughout and shows how mature a player the guitarist was even during his early pre-Miles Davis period. – Scott Yanow
