Raisins and Almonds has so many virtues. First, the jacket with candied almonds and raisins, plus model, is outdone by cartoons, liners, and even a “Borscht Belt” glossary. Yuks aside, the music in this Yiddish-Latin confection is notable. First, Conquet leads by tinkling the ivories only on a few tracks. This is more a showcase for his arranging talents, which are impressive. Holding up the exotic theme (Yiddish and Oriental), clarinet, flutes, horns, and odd variations on these, not to mention interesting percussion. Last, choosing tunes by Roger King Mozian, an arranger of several top oriental-Latin tunes, was smart. Raisins and Almonds is one of those deceptively cheesy-looking old Victor products that nevertheless has many delights. – Tony Wilds
