Not only is Blue a touchstone in the singer-songwriter genre, but owning and listening obsessively is practically a rite of passage for young women (sorry — I've just never known a guy who's responded to this album with quite the same visceral fervor). Blue is ardor and wonder expressed purely and unselfconsciously. Mitchell was in her late 20s when she made the album, and she'd already done a lot of living, but these are the songs of someone who still believes in passion and hope, despite her disappointments. In "All I Want," Mitchell refers to jealousy and greed, and of a relationship marred by spite, but her mind is set is on finding a better way. And she knows it's out there. "I want to have fun," she says, "I want to shine like the sun."
