Josh Ritter, So Runs The World Away
2010 | Label: Pytheas Recordings / Redeye

Since emerging a decade ago as a promising young troubadour, Josh Ritter has gradually grown more confident with each album. So Runs The World Away, his sixth studio effort, is his most artistically ambitious yet. The minute-long opening instrumental "Curtains" is a clue that Ritter is seeking to craft something more than a mere collection of songs; that prelude serves as something of an overture for the 12 songs that follow.

The mood shifts from contemplative… read more »

Perfect really

I challenge anyone to fault this, (as long as you're not death metal obssessed). WHAT A DISC!

Transcendent.

Josh Ritter -- transcendent. I love this. It's the Animal Years, pounding and full -- part 2. Thank you for being so true to the muse inside of you.

Another solid album!

Another solid album from JR. I wish they had Animal Years on emusic. If you dig this try Half Moon Tuesday, they are giving away a free EP on their website until Christmas

Come, fans of "Animal Years"!

paultaylor_2009

Fans of Ritter's 06 Animal Years will not be disappointed. The arrangements sound more complex but at its heart it still has Ritter's storytelling. I kinda would have preferred Animal Years (Part 2) but I will take what I can get!

Add "The Curse" to my top 10 of all time and the rest of the album is worth the download too.

Phenomenal

This is what music should be like. The lyrics are brilliant, the composition is flawless. This is entirely unique and a must-hear. One of the best albums I have ever heard.

A kind of hit-or-miss album for me

JakeR

Songs like "Change of Time," "The Curse," "Folk Bloodbath," "Lark," and "Orbital" are well-themed songs with great lyrics that feel like they were written with ease and an accompaniment, if not spectacular, at least keeps you engaged enough to get through the song. Songs like "The Remnant" on the other hand are terribly annoying, "Lantern" has a lot of just OK lyrics and kind of boring accompaniment, and "Another New World" employs a real cliche songwriting motif using sophomoric images. It's an album with its moments.

One of my favorites of 2010

david.atkins

I have always liked Josh Ritter's songwriting (i.e. lyrics) and now it is paired with even and more soulful music and great production. I love "The Curse"

Better and Better and Better With Each Listen

Sapshot

I'm wearing out my speakers with this album. I love it. It's literary. It's dark. It's deep. Nothing "precious"--by far the best Ritter, and one of the best albums I've listened to in a very, very, very long time.
