A soundtrack to a struggle between Man and God. Or something like that.
2006 | Label: Joy Wants Eternity / TuneCore

"Woe implores: Go! But all joy wants eternity. Wants deep, wants deep eternity." Thus ends Zarathustra's Roundelay, the philosophic poem central to Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra." Along with composer Gustav Mahler (who used the text for his 3rd symphony), the band Joy Wants Eternity have used these words as their initial gesture of introduction to the world. Nietzschian references pepper this album, (see "Abide Moment"'s portrayal of Man's desperation in striving for isolated joy). As with all lyric-less post-rock, we derive our own meaning from the music using only the titles as a loose signpost. Joy Wants Eternity say they aim to "express their compositions into a sort of narrative psychology, a metamorphosis of both equal parts of subtle and explosive moments." It seems they see this heaving album as a soundtrack to a struggle between Man and God. It's a lofty ambition, but not out of the question.

Yes. Amazing album indeed!

This is one of my favorite postrock albums. Though I freely admit that not everyone will enjoy this kind of music, I can't imagine how I would survive my long car trips without it. For car driving music, this is nonpareil.

Amazing album

Great stuff, in a similar vein to godspeed you black emperor, or explosions in the sky, but slightly less dark.

i didn't really know anything about the band when i downloaded the album other than that it received a good rating on the silent ballet. it's very melodic and i simply can't stop listening. highlight track: of dead loves and wanning perfumes. but download all, not just the one song. you won't regret it.

At its essence, post-rock can be defined by four universal rules. First, long and cumbersome titles are king. Second, the songs themselves are usually equally as long (15 minutes is generally considered acceptable). Third, it's best if at least some of the tracks end with the noise of long-suffering instruments in tangible torment (see: Mono's "Com(?)"). Finally, a general thematic feel of impending doom is welcomed. If all this sounds a little flippant or disrespectful,… more »
