Early sides from one of Chicago's best tin sandwich players.
2006 | Label: Fuel 2000 / The Orchard

Junior Wells 'staccato, wailing harp is downplayed on these 1957-61 sides, but “Calling All Blues” (with Earl Hooker on guitar) and the hard-rocking “Messin'with the Kid” make for a devastating one-two punch. Unfortunately, with the exception of the four live bonus tracks, this material can also be found on Fuel's more comprehensive Calling All Blues, itself basically a condensation of eMusic's Jewel-Paula options.

The Thrilling Inconsistency of Buddy Guy

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

At his best, Buddy Guy is everything his ardent fans claim: an incendiary guitarist who makes every note count, both technically and emotionally, as well as a tortured singer. When ax and voice are both in full shriek and Guy is not hamming it up, he's a wonder to behold. And if he does ham it up too much of the time, perhaps it's because that's the only way a true bluesman can earn a… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Essentially, An Introduction to Junior Wells is an abbreviated version of the Fuel 2000 release Calling All Blues. This material predates Hoodoo Man Blues, the landmark 1965 electric Chicago blues album on Delmark with tunes recorded between 1957 and 1961. Of the 14 cuts, nine were originally issued on Chief, with one track, “Little by Little,” released on Profile. The remaining bonus tracks are unspecified live versions of “Help Me,” “Look Over Yonder,” “Messin’ with the Kid,” and “I Can’t Help Myself.” All of this material is rock-solid and should definitely exist in your collection between Blues Hit Big Town and Hoodoo Man Blues. – Al Campbell
