A supremely confident songwriting comeback that's simultaneously over and underdressed
2013 | Label: RCA Records Label

“He’s so talented he can do anything!” That’s the gist of what’s typically said about Justin Timberlake, and for the most part it’s absolutely true. He’s an exceptionally nimble and unfettered singer/dancer, an extraordinary mimic with a drummer’s sense of timing. These gifts have helped him tremendously in comedy as well as drama, and despite the increasing maturity of his music and acting pursuits, he hasn’t let go of his ample boyish charm: This ex-Mouseketeer,… read more »

Not really!

Same cookie cutter top 40 rhythm and beats. Nothing spectacular about this as I cringed just listening to the previews, just slap another artist name of your picking and it all sounds the same. Stick to the movies bro as your were beginning to actually be good at acting.

Groovin and tasty but a bit simple

I'm listening for the first time now, on vinyl (4 sides + dl card), and I'm really enjoying the grooves and dancability. The album has some of the same feel as FS/LS, which is probably Timbaland, and I can imagine JT poppin on the stage to most of the tracks. Loving it so far, although the album should be a bit more ambitious with it's changes and hooks, especially considering the track lengths. Regardless, I can't wait to make this a major album of the spring and summer. Interesting to note, the prices when not logged in are 1.29 per track, but logged into eMusic they're now 0.89 (at least, on release day, 2013 March).

Six Degrees of Off the Wall

By Michelangelo Matos, Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
