Fabulous sound, good accoustic blues

mr. mark

K.C. Douglas, best known for writing the standard "Mercury Blues (as "Mercury Boogie") in 1949. recorded for the late 50's audiophile label Cook, on colored vinyl. Though not on the Cook label, this disc (recorded by Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz) sounds just as crisp, and in true stereo. Musically, Douglas' style alternated vocal and guitar lines, with the guitar rhythms somewhat gentle. Lemon Jefferson is somewhat similar. K.C. remained active through his death in the 1975, backing Mercy Dee Walton ("One Room Country Shack")and performing at the San Francisco Blues Festival.

Like Big Road Blues, K.C. Blues was recorded in 1961 during the peak of the blues revival. Unlike that record, which contained a number of songs he learned through Tommy Johnson, K.C.’s Blues consists primarily of original compositions that showcase Douglas’ easy-rolling, relaxed style perfectly. – Thom Owens
