Powerful and commanding atmospheres.
2004 | Label: Illuminarium Records / CD Baby

This is a live recording of Sonam-Dorje's extended ambient — and at times dissonant — workouts on the "Earth Gong." This series of four recordings is Sonam-Dorje's interpretation of what the teetering edge of the universe sounds like. Inspired by his travels in Tibet and his practices as a Vajrayana Buddhist, Dorje conjures the sounds of deep, sacred space. There is an undeniably, otherworldly quality to these pieces. I think that has something to do with the fact that the Earth gong can hold a charge and be a transductive instrument that receives as well as sends. The vibrations are the stuff of creation, and there is a feeling of "returning to the source" in the haunting mystery of these pieces. This is not sappy or formulaic new age musical doctrine, but powerful and commanding atmospheres that have a life that is positively entrancing.

I spent my night in emergency hell, shielding my eyes from the blinding fluorescent light rays,… more »
