Not remixes.

Overall I love this album. Upfront though, I have to say "Deeper Understanding" was a mistake. The new vocoding sounds ridiculous. That said, the rest of the album is interesting. The new recordings attempt to present the songs in a way that subtly brings out different shades of meaning to them. For example, on "Lily," the previous version felt like a military march attended by the chorus of angels. This version feels more vulnerable, pushing the chorus out and placing dramatic effect on words like "darkness." The variations of these new recordings are subtle. "The Red Shoes" makes you feel the lashes, pain and blood, the flutes and whistles of the previous show muted. The most powerful tracks are "Moments of Pleasure," which sounds like a dying woman's nostalgia told to a very close friend, and Rubberband Girl, which now sounds like a radio anthem played in a convertible after being released from a psychiatric ward. Kate's always been a faceted jewel. This release is prismatic.

This Woman's Work

I am a big fan of Kate - however, I only chose so far to download This Woman's Work. And it is incredible and haunting! I wanted to download one of my other favorites -- Deeper Understanding - but it sounds ridiculous now (at least from the sample).

Interesting concept

Just like with movies where sections of the artist's work are left on the editing floor (not for lack of quality, but rather for change in emphasis or mood, intention, or flow), Kate Bush has brought back different takes and had the music changed to where the vocals are less prevalent and more part of the music than standing apart. Her vocals have always been front and center of everyone of her albums and producers and engineers have always done that to her tracks. It is interesting and quite different to hear it this way. Listening to this album makes me wonder how much Kate would rather have had the rest of her music balanced with her vocals instead.

Unpolished performances, mixes, to uneven effect

marklackeydotnet

On "And So Is Love" and "Top of the City" Bush reveals as much passion and range as ever. On some other tracks her voice is less supple. The new version of "This Woman's Work" is worth the price of admission. The vocal maturity contributes to a performance at turns more careworn, reflective, dreamlike, arresting than the breathtaking version on The Sensual World. Bush also uses her more mature voice to good effect on a funkier, more present "Deeper Understanding," though the sonic novelty of the less subtle "machine voice" may annoy fans of the original. "Flower of the Mountain" ("The Sensual World”) suffers for loss of nuance. The voice is very exposed, making the speaker vulnerable and foregrounding this lyric, but her voice is less sylphlike than on the earlier recording and it does not sit well in the track. The clear diction is less enticing than the original’s half-heard murmurs punctuated with “mmm, yes.”

Muffled Mess

ericrmatthews1

I agree with the other reviewer in that her voice sounds muffled but the good thing is that it makes her less annoying!

what's up with the sound?

her voice is strangely muffled in many tracks, or is it just me?

Comeback Kids: The 10 Best Musical Resurrections

By Arye Dworken, eMusic Contributor

Remember that band you loved that broke up? Well, next year, they're playing Coachella. We live in an age when band reunions are bordering on passé, which can obscure the fact that a well-executed comeback is often difficult to come by. Take Limp Bizkit. That once incredibly popular band released an album this year that you probably had had no idea existed. Or on a somewhat more credible note, Duran Duran reunited and recruited famed… more »

Six Degrees of Kate Bush’s Never for Ever

By Marc Hogan, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
