Overall I love this album. Upfront though, I have to say "Deeper Understanding" was a mistake. The new vocoding sounds ridiculous. That said, the rest of the album is interesting. The new recordings attempt to present the songs in a way that subtly brings out different shades of meaning to them. For example, on "Lily," the previous version felt like a military march attended by the chorus of angels. This version feels more vulnerable, pushing the chorus out and placing dramatic effect on words like "darkness." The variations of these new recordings are subtle. "The Red Shoes" makes you feel the lashes, pain and blood, the flutes and whistles of the previous show muted. The most powerful tracks are "Moments of Pleasure," which sounds like a dying woman's nostalgia told to a very close friend, and Rubberband Girl, which now sounds like a radio anthem played in a convertible after being released from a psychiatric ward. Kate's always been a faceted jewel. This release is prismatic.
