KMD, The Best of KMD
2004 | Label: Nature Sounds / The Orchard

KMD was part of the New School flurry of post-De La Soul signings, when major label execs thought they were cashing in on "cute black suburban rap." But behind the tales of puppy love and the warm, easy beats was an acid-dripped take on racism and (mis)education. The group was soon dropped by black execs on the far side of the generation gap who didn't understand the crew's obsessions or cover art choices, and Subroc was killed in a tragic car accident. Zev Love X continued on, making engrossingly leftfield music as MF Doom. New school music worth rediscovering.
