Updating the swagger of classic blues with a massive, scarifying voice
Label: Alligator Records

From this, her 1975 label debut, until her death in 2009, Taylor personified the label’s aesthetic as well as anyone. Updating the swagger of classic blues singers like Bessie Smith to the postwar sound, her massive, scarifying voice made her something like the female Howlin’ Wolf on the likes of her own “Voodoo Woman.” Nearly everything she sang was uptempo (or at least midtempo) and she made it all pure Koko, even a country song like Webb Pierce’s “Honkey Tonkey.”

I've had this on Lp since its original release and I love it. The backing band here is exceptional.

Koko Taylor,Sammy Lawhorn, Mighty Joe Young and Abb Locke you can't get much better unless your going to put Little Walter,Dave Meyers,Louis Meyers,Fred Below and Big Mama Thornton all together that's what it would take to top this!!!!!!

The queen’s first album for Alligator, and still one of her very best to date. A tasty combo sparked by guitarists Mighty Joe Young and Sammy Lawhorn and saxist Abb Locke provide sharp support as the clear-voiced Taylor belts Bobby Saxton’s “Trying to Make a Living,” and Magic Sam’s “That’s Why I’m Crying,” her own “Honkey Tonkey” and “Voodoo Woman,” and Ruth Brown’s swinging “Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean.” – Bill Dahl
