2011: I Shall Be Released

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

May 23, 2011, was a small landmark for pop music. Lady Gaga had announced on New Year's Eve that her new album Born This Way would be released on that date, and the drumbeats heralding it kept building; it sold more than 1.1 million copies in its first week (partly thanks to massive discounting). It wasn't the biggest release date for any album ever, and it's not the last release date that will ever be… more »

2011: The Year of Europop

By Barry Walters, eMusic Contributor

During the last two decades, much of what wasn't rock - and even plenty of rock itself - had something to do with hip-hop. Pop tempos drifted to the middle, lyrics got more aggressive, melody narrowed and simplified, and gender lines stopped blurring. In Europe and much of the world, dance music radicalized pop with the synth sounds of the future, but upbeat club sounds rarely reached US radio beyond Madonna and Janet Jackson. We… more »

Six Degrees of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way

By Michelangelo Matos, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Lady Gaga began 2011 with her much-anticipated sophomore set, Born This Way, and she ends the year with Born This Way: The Remix, a 14-track collection of revisions and remixes of some, but not all, of the songs on the album. There are some marquee names here — whether perennials like Goldfrapp or 2011 sensations Foster the People, Twin Shadow, and the Weeknd — and some remixes take considerable liberty, ditching verses or hooks, whatever catches their fancy. So, it’s a remix album not for fairweather travelers but rather the hardcore Little Monsters, the kind who love every gesture grand or small from Gaga, but it also displays enough imagination to appeal to those listeners who fall into neither camp and are only looking for some darkly elastic dance. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
