Gaga's Over-the-Top bid for eternity
2011 | Label: Streamline/Kon Live/Interscope

The biggest problem with Lady Gaga is that she always seemed to be putting her back into her image and media stunts far more than her music. Certainly, she had her moments, and it helps that those early hits made their way into the hearts of hardy skeptics eventually; I was one. But even if I grew to admire "Paparazzi" and adored "Alejandro" immediately, with most of the rest at least registering favorably, it nagged at me that someone with that many ideas wasn't putting more of them into the recordings.

That no longer applies even a little. Born This Way isn't simply a bid to be a big pop album, but a great one. And she pulls it off. Like Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Gaga enlisted big-name help for her Over-The-Top bid for eternity: The archetypal power ballad "You & I" is produced by Mutt Lange and features Brian May on guitar; the sax solo on "The Edge of Glory" comes courtesy of the E Street Band's Clarence Clemons. And there are plenty of other audible touchstones. The screeching synths of "Government Hooker" recall no one so much as noisy Parisian house duo Justice, while "Heavy Metal… read more »

This album has a few good songs, but otherwise is a let down to GaGa fans. But if you don't like it, simply don't listen to it.

This "music" is as ugly, empty, and depressing as the cover image.

I love various music, that has meaning, with excellent musicans. One thing I find with Lady beyond all the goop she wears, is she has a real voice, she writes all her own material and it is deep. But ya you really have to get past the get ups. I love You and I and Born This Way, she has no bones about saying she wanted to be a POP Star) Star) was what she was after. I can really see thru to her heart though and love her for that!

Meh?

Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE Lady Gaga fan, which I think is why I feel so comfortable saying I don't like this album. Its quite repetitive and nothing innovative compared to The Fame and The Fame Monster. However, I am in LOVE with \"You and I.\" Its bluesy, sweet and raw, and a style she perfected in one song.

Little too much drum machine, Ga Ga good

Ga Ga is Great!. I saw her sing the mellow \"you and I\" with her piano on \"the view,\" and it was wonderful. This album has a lot of drum machine, disco sounding hard rhythms, and synthesizers. If not for the voice of Ga Ga, it would be average music. what i mean is, accompaniment is a bore and can be grating but the album is still great....and if you happen to like repetitive rhythms and disco stuff, you will love this absolutely. I prefer her alone at her piano.

BUY THIS. Lady GaGa is the most talented performer I have heard or seen in 15 years. My wife hates her, but she only sees the videos and does'nt LISTEN to the music. This is the most talented lady in music today and tomorrow. It's a shame that most people don't go beyond the videos and the hype. Lady GaGa is the Hillary Clinton of music! I love you lady GaGa (I am not using her real name) and you just keep doing what you do. You are the best.

They Say All Music Guide

Lady Gaga’s drama club ambition to marry rock & roll rebellion with her disco beats turns Born This Way into Like a Prayer by way of Bat Out of Hell. She knowingly recontextualizes Madonna for a post-modern collage, the sly similarities offering tangible reminders that Gaga is the heir to the diva throne. Her true gift is her considerable dexterity at delivering the basics. “Marry the Night” glistens with a neon pulse, “Born This Way” has a giddiness to its self-importance, “Judas” turns “Alejandro” into towering gothic disco, she achieves her metal-disco fusion on “Bad Kids,” and she even shows vulnerability on “You and I.” – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
