Sophisticated Music
Sibelius may appear as a composer whose tonal language is thoroughly grey. It is, though, only a superficial impression and will be changed and deepened the more you listen to him. In fact, the tonal texture of these pieces is extremely rich. Sibelius has exceptionally deep feeling for nature. Osmo Vänskä, originally a clarinetist, is a perfectionist but also an inspiring person. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra consists of ordinary musicians. But conducted by a splendid musician they have reached the standard of that of only the best orchestras. They are unique together, as a musical community. *****. TJ
