Lamb, Best Kept Secrets: The Best of Lamb 1996-2004
Label: KOCH Records / Entertainment One Distribution

By late 2004, the overwhelming flood of electronic acts had slowed to a manageable stream, making it a good time to reappraise overlooked oeuvres such as that of Manchester duo Lamb, a band that has never fit in anywhere. Over the course of the four albums sampled here, Lamb never landed their luscious atmospherics in a high-profile commercial; their refined approach to matching genre-free songwriting (Is it folk, jazz, pop or art-song?) to equally untethered arrangements also left them without an in-crowd niche. Emphasizing neither voice nor rhythm, Andrew Barlow's arrangements are too often too anxious for the chill-out box; they're packed with off-kilter beats but stop short of conventional dance music. Singer Louise Rhodes similarly emphasizes focused emotion over hooks, yet ballads like "Gorecki" and "Gabriel" suggest Sarah McLachlan hits in an ideal world, and Barlow's skill at integrating natural instruments with digitized trickery helps Lamb achieve a lofty hybrid beauty akin to Massive Attack. This collection serves notice to the wide audience this pair have deserved all along.

love her voice......

yellowstar2000

these lush soundscapes transport you beyond the ordinary electronica melodies into a world of faded memories and soul-searching secrets, lamb continues to capture my heart with every song...and its not difficult to distinguish her voice from the hundreds of others in her genre...if you only download one album from them, make it this one.

Love it.

Listen with an open mind. It's beautiful music. Her voice is incredibly unique. People who are used to listening to mainstream singers need not apply.

Sublime

For my money, Angelica is one of the best tracks ever...lovely and tranquil, but also tinges of yearning and darkness. Happily, no vocals.

Man, it's been years since I listened to Lamb. For some reason I stumbled across it in my player, and it is still so so good. I'm loving it. It's always a good sign when you can return to music years later and still appreciate it. Lamb's vocals are sublime, and the music complex and inviting. I can't understand criticism of their sound.

vocal is horrible

I did not buy...Just like some people said, the female singer has a terrible voice and ruins everything.

Yes

definately better than Portishead, though that is like comparing an old shoe box to a fantastic pair of shoes so its not really a fair comparison.

Pop that's 100 times better than regular pop

Although Lamb tracks have a very characteristic sound, their music is still very emotionally and stylistically eclectic. So, don't just press "download all". Instead, listen to the songs and download selectively - and definitely also listen to the songs on the other Lamb albums! Sure, this "best-of" is a pretty good bunch of tracks, and it covers the gigantic must-haves like "Górecki" and "Gabriel", but there are also some real gems that aren't included here. As for the style, I think that the comparisons to Portishead are understandable but misleading. They both feature intensely moody and strangely beautiful female vocals. But where Portishead's music is consistent (slow jazz-infused trip-hop), Lamb's music is much more eclectic (though it usually veers somewhere near drum and bass). Lamb's music is sometimes graceful and pretty, sometimes frenetic and explosive - and very often interesting, dynamic, and catchy. Highly recommended

and louise's voice is fantastic - love portishead too, and i once heard lamb described and portishead on speed, which i guess it is sometimes. if you've never heard lamb this would be a great album, but if you've got all the albums already...

Gabriel is beautiful

lomax.spodenki

Gabriel has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard for ages (if you've not heard it take a listen - it comes up in the background of programs like CSI a lot). Personally I really rate Lambs vocals

The vocalist on these songs just ruins everything

QWAME

My God, this album sucks. The songs would have been pretty dope on their own, but this girl singer just makes everything sound horrible. This is like a really watered down version of Portishead(Whom I'm a big fan of). Would not recommend.

They Say All Music Guide

For old-schoolers, Best Kept Secrets is Louise Rhodes and Andrew Barlow’s thank-you note. The U.K. electronica duo accompanies each track with personal reflections, letting longtime listeners in on some first-time knowledge. But for the considerable portion of the globe that never discovered Lamb, its 16 songs and six videos are signal flares in the darkness. From the comforting, romantic swirl of “Gabriel” (from 2001′s What Sound) through the chattering beats, slurping bass, and cut-up strings of “B Line” — what is it, hot jazz in the 23rd century? — all the way to the outfit’s relative “hit,” the chilly ’90s electronica boom nugget “Gorecki,” Best Kept Secrets covers the Lamb bases for both the knowledgeable and the neophyte. – Johnny Loftus
