This note date:09/26/09 In another land is one of the best Jesus Music LPs of the decade. Outstanding songwriting and creativity through and through. Hey james rovira, R. Matthews did not write i wish we'd all been ready, he just played the song on his album. Check the liner notes. Enjoy the vaudeville "the sun began to rain", the rocker voice on "shot down" and the sublime feeling of "one way". Download this!!!
The third in Larry's trilogy of 70's albums wherein he offers not only great music, but wry observations of America at the time. The album has flat out rockers as well as sensitive ballads. A true must!
Look for the bonus tracks on his releases and the length of the songs. I am a long time fan of Larry; I have the original release of this album and the 25th anniversary release but the bonus tracks on this one are not on either one of those, when Larry revisited a song it really became a new song. Larry was a sinner saved by grace, same as the rest of us, if we are honest. That is what he sings about, real life.
Yes, Larry Norman is widely known as the father of Christian rock, but Randy Matthews was writing/recording concurrently with Larry Norman, and Randy Matthews is the author of "I Wish We'd All Been Ready." Leaving that aside, however, Larry Norman is a brilliantly original songwriter whose originality still holds up today. I played some LN for my eighteen year old daughter a few months ago and she said, "Wow...that's good...that doesn't even sound like Christian music." She's a Newsboys/DC Talk CCM generation. Whether or not he's the first Christian rock and roller history can decide. He's certainly one of the best. Perhaps the best. I should add that John Wetton, best known for his work with Asia, plays bass on this album, which is probably Larry's most commercially successful. Every track works. Just sample the first five songs.
When the whole Christian Rock thing blew up in the '80's, Mr. Norman was left on the outside looking in, despite his undisputed status as the original Righteous Rocker. I remember talking to a promoter of Christian concerts in late '85 and asking him what Larry was up to, whether he'd promoted any of his shows. His answer: "I don't promote shows on the planet Venus." Sad but true.
