From the ashes of Negative Approach came the Laughing Hyenas. They brought all the punk energy and wrapped it in a more musically accessible sound. The sound recording technology of the late eighties limits the power of this double LP. They had a very powerful live sound that unfortunately was not captured. There are a few bands I wish would have been captured live with today's technology...Husker Du and the Hyenas are near the top from this era

Though Brannon still shrieks and gnashes his throat on The Hyenas’ second LP, You Can’t Pray a Lie, the band takes a decisive step toward the musical setting of the moody dirges heard on future records. “Seven Come Eleven” is a rhythmic orgy of distortion and noise, while on “Lullaby and Goodnight,” Brannon even manages to calm down a bit, a path he would follow more closely on all future Hyenas albums. – Matt Carlson
