Hooker O.K. (formerly known as simply Hooker) consists of Michael Kirts (one part of Yum Yum’s revolving lineup) and Patrick O’Connell (normally of Number One Cup) — the duo’s work as Hooker O.K. has them penning loose, minimal acoustic pop and recording in pared-down, homemade setting. The result, on this self-title release, is an occasionally earnest, occasionally humorous collection of pop simplicities, pulling songs together out of such simple arrangements as an acoustic guitar and cheap keyboard percussion. Despite the fact that some of the songwriting is less than worthwhile, the album’s minimalism is frequently charming and manages to keep from seeming overly cutesy or just plain amateurish. – Nitsuh Abebe
