An Icon of Punk

I loved Lena from the first time I heard her belting out Lucky Number. There have been some not so great things, but all in all she is SPECTACULAR. If you like alternative music, you'll love Lovich.

since 1978

i first heard her in 1978 and went right out and bought her "stateless" LP.i had to look in the "import" section of the record store as she wasn't known by anyone here in the usa but me apparently at the time./i still have the vinyl LP this very day as well as hotel blue and new toy and nearly all of her material in existence, including a live concert(DVD)that was performed sometime in the 80's but i forget momentarily the exact year.lene lovich(pronounced lay-nuh luv itch) is imo,the all time new wave artist.i believe that her and gary numan share the same belief of being able to correspond with aliens, which makes her stuff even more mysterious.

I have had so much fun listening to these songs. Why didn't I hear more of her in the '80s -- I was in Never Never Land.

Ah, Lene Lovich I loved you then... How nice to have a little piece again. I have these on vinyl in my garage somewhere. A great collection of a very talented and unique artist. She is the goddess of "New Wave".

It's Lene, you'll Lov-ich!

Djxs03

Although it's only a compilation and therefore only contains the "hits" or "singles" so to speak, this is well worth buying. Forget about her later efforts "March" and "Shadows & Dust". Take "Lucky Number (Best of)", you won't be disappointed! Other suggestions to new and current fans: check out "Stateless", "No Mans Land" and "Flex" (If you can find them).

They Say All Music Guide

This 22-track anthology draws wholly from Lovich’s recordings from the Stiff label in the late ’70s and early ’80s (which in turn represented most of her recorded output), including tracks from all three of her albums and a few stray non-LP cuts. There’s more Lene Lovich on Stiff, and everything else she did for the company has been reissued if you want it, but if you do only want one disc, this is a reasonable choice. It has all half-dozen of her high-charting and low-charting U.K. singles, and while the exact songs chosen to fill out the disc could be argued depending upon individual tastes, it’s indisputably good value for money, with 77 minutes of music. Although there’s a gap in quality between the best and most well-remembered material (like “Lucky Number,” “Say When,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Home,” and “Too Tender (To Touch),” all of which are here), the inclusion of less characteristic items like the gypsy-flavored B-side “One Lonely Heart” and the overlooked 1982 B-side “Blue” (with more of a straightforward guitar thrust than most of her work) reveal her to have more range than some critics have acknowledged. The annotation is on the slender side (though at least there is annotation), but it’s an enjoyable and fairly well-programmed survey of one of the British new wave’s quirkier talents. – Richie Unterberger
